Heels to face host in Maui tourney
North Carolina's holiday visit to Hawaii will begin with a game against the team that pulled perhaps the biggest upset in college basketball history.
School officials said Tuesday the Tar Heels will begin play in the Maui Invitational against Chaminade.
The Silverswords are the host school for the tournament. The Division II school was a member of the NAIA 26 years ago when it sprung a monumental upset, beating top-ranked Virginia and star Ralph Sampson.
North Carolina is the clear favorite to begin the season at No. 1 and win the national title. Its top six scorers return, including reigning national player of the year Tyler Hansbrough.
Also in the Tar Heels' bracket in Maui are Oregon and Alabama.
