Youth jazz society asking for old shoes

Wednesday, August 6
(updated 3:00 am)

Get rid of your old, gently used shoes by donating them to the Triad Youth Jazz Society.

Triad Youth Jazz Society is holding a used shoe drive now through Sept. 13.

"The shoes we collect will be sent to an organization that recycles the shoes and sends them to third-world countries that need them," said Tracey Thompson, marketing director, Triad Youth Jazz Society.

The shoe drive is also a fundraiser for the Triad Youth Jazz Society scholarship fund.

"We get paid by the pound for the shoes, and all of those funds will go to our scholarship."

Thompson said the shoes can be dropped off at Coffee at the Summit at 623 Summit Ave.

"We won't take flip-flops, bedroom slippers and shoes with holes. Men's shoes and sneakers weigh the most, but we will take all lightly used shoes," she said.

Before you drop off shoes, call Thompson at 965-7666 or 965-1548.

"Our goal is 12,000 pairs of shoes," she said.

The Triad Youth Jazz Society is a nonprofit organization for youths ages 8 to 18.

The goal of the jazz society is to use music education as a vehicle to create a learning model of excellence and to develop informed and responsible young global citizens.
