Whatever the sport, there's a place to play in Triad

Got the couch potato blues? Need to fuel your competitive fire? Just want an excuse to fling a dodgeball at someone?

The Triad offers plenty of options for weekend warriors to work up a sweat, no matter what your activity of choice.

The Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department runs adult leagues in baseball, softball and flag football in the spring, kickball in the fall and basketball and dodgeball in the winter. Youth programs include baseball, softball, soccer, football, lacrosse and cheerleading.

You also can try any of the local YMCAs, which run summer camps, youth and adult athletic leagues and community swim programs with competitive teams such as the GCY Makos and aquatic rehab classes for people with conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia.

The city of Greensboro also maintains indoor community swimming pools at Grimsley and Smith high schools, as well as the Smith Senior Center. Outdoor pools are at four locations across the city.

More specialized youth leagues can be found through organizations such as local Little League affiliates, Triad Rugby and Greensboro Youth Soccer, which is based at the state-of-the-art Bryan Park Soccer Complex in Browns Summit.

The Greensboro Gaters AAU basketball program encompasses more than 400 players in 11 age brackets, each of which advanced a team to the national tournament in 2008.

The Triad Youth Lacrosse Association also has grown considerably in recent years. It holds an annual LaxFest event in June that brings in teams from throughout the state.

Tennis players can choose from more than 130 courts and 30 tournaments operated by the Triad Tennis Management Company, an extension of the city of Greensboro. More than 2,000 players take part in the program each year, with much of the action taking place at the Spencer Love Tennis Center.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the Piedmont Hiking and Outing Club hosts events almost daily, from brisk power walks to 46-mile bike rides through the mountains.

The city of High Point also maintains six recreation centers, two golf courses, a tennis center and the 340-acre City Lake Park.

The Greensboro Running Club boasts more than 300 members and coordinates races throughout the year. The North Carolina Marathon returned to Greensboro this year after a 14-year hiatus and drew more than 1,500 participants.
