RALEIGH (AP) - Gov. Mike Easley is making progress on a stack of bills awaiting his signature.
On the eve of his Tuesday shoulder surgery, Easley signed 26 pieces of legislation into law.
Among them is a measure which removes the names, ages and addresses of youth park program participants from government records considered open and available to the public. Lawmakers pushed for the measure as a way to protect children from advertisers and child predators.
Another new law allows the state Highway Patrol to pay up to $10,000 in funeral costs for troopers killed in the line of duty, including slain trooper David Blanton who was shot and killed in June.
Both laws take effect immediately.
Easley must sign or veto the remaining 87 bills by Aug. 17 or they become law.
