Transportation improvement plan drafted
The Greensboro Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization released its draft transportation improvement program for 2009-15, and it includes details on several road projects for northwest Guilford County.
Right of way acquisition for the widening of U.S. 220 will begin late this year with two-year construction to start in 2010.
The widening runs from Horse Pen Creek Road north to the Haw River and intersecting with the planned U.S. 220/N.C. 68 connector, according to a news release from the town of Summerfield.
The project's estimated cost is $54.6 million.
The connector project, estimated to cost $190.8 million, will be built in three segments. Right of way acquisition for segments A and B, which provide for alignment from Edgefield Road north to U.S. 220 and the Haw River, is scheduled to begin in 2010-11 with construction in 2013.
Right of way acquisition for segment C, a connector from the Haw River north to the intersection of U.S. 220 and N.C. 68 in Rockingham County, has already been completed. Construction on that segment is scheduled to begin in 2010.
According to the town news release, the Summerfield Comprehensive Plan Committee is taking into account the long-term effects of the projects in its planning.
"The new and upgraded facilities may divide and isolate parts of our community much like a river," the release says.
Short-term effects include traffic disruptions along U.S. 220 and increased noise.
The public can share their opinions of the plan until Aug. 15 by mailing comments to the MPO at Greensboro Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 3136, Greensboro, NC 27402.
Comments also can be made online at www.guampo.org or by calling 373-4368.
Copies of the plan are available at the Web site as well as at government offices, including Oak Ridge, Stokesdale and Summerfield town halls.
