Four Aggies are honored

Four members of the N.C. A&T football team are preseason second-team all-conference picks in the MEAC -- senior running back Michael Ferguson, junior linebacker Andre Thornton, senior safety Brandon Colbert and senior defensive end Tyre Glasper. After two straight winless seasons, the Aggies were picked to finish last in the conference by both the league's coaches and sports information directors. S.C. State was picked to win the conference. S.C. State running back William Ford was named MEAC preseason offensive player of the year, and Howard linebacker Endor Cooper was preseason defensive player of the year.

BASKETBALL

CLAYTON SIGNS WITH FINNISH TEAM: Former Smith High School standout Jeremy Clayton is among three graduated Appalachian State men's basketball players who have signed pro contracts in Europe. Clayton will suit up for Korhait in Finland while Doug McLaughlin-Williams will join the Sheffield Arrows in England and Donte Minter will play for Sdent BBC Nyon in Switzerland.

GATERS WIN TWO: The 16U North Carolina Gaters opened pool play at the 16 & Under AAU Nationals in Orlando with two victories. The Gaters defeated Team Illinois 72-50 in the first game. P.J. Hairston led with 18 points while Jay Canty had 15 points and eight rebounds. In the second game, the Gaters defeated the NYC Jaguars 81-61 behind Hairston's 20 points and five assists.

BASEBALL

HITOMS 8, FAYETTEVILLE 1: Wes Hobson led off the bottom of the first inning with his third home run of the summer and the HiToms (31-16, 15-4) defeated the Fayetteville Swampdogs in CPL baseball.

soccer

WAKE FOREST: Former Connecticut standout Megan Jessee has been named assistant coach in charge of the goalie in women's soccer at Wake Forest. She joins the staff after spending a year as a graduate assistant at Slippery Rock.

CYCLING

HANES PARK CLASSIC: More than 300 pro men and women cyclists are expected to compete in the 31st annual Hanes Park Classic on Aug. 3 in Winston-Salem.
