CLEMMONS — Davidson County deputies said they found more than 1,700 Valium pills Thursday under the front seat of a pickup truck during a traffic checkpoint.

The Davidson County Sheriff's Office said Brian Thomas Russell, 21, of 5300 Green Drive in High Point, has been charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver schedule IV narcotics, possession of Schedule VI narcotics, maintaining a vehicle for keeping or selling a controlled substance and four counts of possession of drug paraphernalia. Thomas' bond
was set at $10,000.

The sheriff's office said deputies had set up a driver's license checkpoint Thursday in the 4300 block of Friedburg Church Road in northern Davidson County. A check of a silver Chevrolet S-10 pickup revealed an expired inspection sticker and a strong smell of alcohol inside the truck.

Deputies checked further and found 1,730 Valium pills and several grams of marijuana under the truck's seat. The sheriff's office said the pills had a street value of about $9,000.
