Camp uses service to teach citizenship
Guilford County high school students can learn ways to give back to their community during a service camp Aug. 4-8 at the Greensboro Historical Museum.
The Service Learning Impacting Citizenship Camp is a week-long event that aims to unite youth across different social groups through service. The goal is to empower young people to become engaged citizens, said Aaron Hunt, program director at The Volunteer Center.
"Each day from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., the campers will participate in group activities that allow them to learn about issues and discover how they can have a positive impact on our community," Hunt said.
Gene Brown of Housing Greensboro, Shane Burton of Triad Health Project, Jasia Stevenson of Greensboro Youth Council and Carolyn Spence of Greensboro Beautiful are among the speakers at the camp.
Campers also will go to local nonprofit organizations, such as the Greensboro Urban Ministry and the Adult Center for Enrichment, to put what they have learned into action by volunteering at an agency for three hours a day.
Hunt said health, environment, literacy, poverty and hunger issues will all be explored. The camp is open to rising ninth-graders up to high school seniors, and applications will be taken through Wednesday.
Interested youths should contact Hunt at 373-1633 or aaronhunt@volunteergso.org.
