Area briefs: Wake to honor ex-trainer's wife
Wake Forest's defending national champion men's soccer team will honor the wife of former trainer Stephen Wiley in its season opener Aug. 19 against Wofford at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem. After a long battle with breast cancer, Genna Wiley died three days after Wake Forest won the national championship last fall. The Genna Wiley Memorial Game starts at 7 p.m.

JAMESTOWN GOLFER QUALIFIES: Sydney Crane, a rising senior on the North Carolina women's golf team, has qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur. Crane, a Jamestown native and alumna of Ragsdale High School, fired a 72 at Sapona Country Club in Lexington on July 9 to qualify for this year's Amateur, which will be played Aug. 4-10 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. She also reached the quarterfinals of the Women's North & South Amateur before losing to Ryann O'Toole, a rising senior at UCLA.

NORTH CAROLINA: After spending seven seasons on the North Carolina baseball staff, the last three as pitching coach, Scott Forbes has been promoted to associate head coach.
HITOMS RAINED OUT: The HiToms and Forest City Owls were rained out Wednesday night at Finch Field. The game will be made up Aug. 2 in Forest City.
