( 7:40 am)

WINSTON-SALEM - An infant suffered critical injuries after being thrown from an SUV on Saturday night, police said.

Elizabeth Havenna Williams, the infant's mother, was driving a 2004 GMC Envoy when she was turning left onto Salem Gardens Drive from the parking lot of #2 Salem Gardens Drive.

Williams, 36, lost control of the SUV and ran off the road to the left, according to Winston-Salem police.

The SUV knocked down the fence and turned over. The infant was then ejected from the SUV, suffering serious injuries.

The infant was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and was listed in very critical condition as of early Sunday morning, police said.

Williams and the three passengers in the SUV were not injured, police said.

Police were still investigating the cause of the crash as of Sunday morning.
