'92 Jammers reach national title game

The '92 Jamestown Jammers reached the boys national championship game at the Director's Cup Soccer Tournament in Kirkwood, Del., with a pair of 2-2 ties Saturday. In the opener, the Jammers tied Pennsylvania on goals by Gray DePasquale and Joey Fiorello. In the second game, the Jammers tied Maryland on goals by Bart Toe and Pierce Verchick. The championship is today at 10 a.m.

BASKETBALL

AAU 9-AND-UNDER TOURNAMENT: The Greensboro Warriors won two games at the AAU boys basketball national championship in Orlando and will advance to today's quarterfinals. In the first game, the Warriors defeated the Norfolk Wildcats 36-17 behind 11 points from Jordan Perkins and eight from Keyshawn Watkins. The Warriors beat the Arkansas Hawks 36-30 in the second game. Brion Seagraves led with nine points. The under-9 North Carolina Gaters split their two games Saturday. Kameron Langley hit a 3-point shot as time expired to lift the Gaters past the RYTES Warriors from Houston 31-28 in the first game. Jeremiah Praylor led the Gaters with 10 points and eight rebounds. The Gaters lost to the DC Assualt -- the nation's top-ranked team -- 38-23 in the second game.

WOMEN'S NORTH & SOUTH AMATEUR: Australian Kristie Smith will face Georgetown's Chelsea Curtis in the finals of the Women's North & South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst No. 2 today. Smith beat Furman's Blair Lamb in Saturday's semifinals 3&2. Curtis, a rising senior at Georgetown, defeated Louisville's Cindy LaCrosse 5&4 in the other semifinal.

ACE SPEEDWAY: Mebane's Speedy Faucette captured his seventh consecutive win at Ace Speeway. He led the final 78 laps of the 100-lap feature to win his eighth race of the year. Reidsville's Rodney Cook finished second. Thomas Scott of Corbett Ridge led all 25 laps in the Modified race.

BOWMAN GRAY STADIUM: Burt Myers took the checkered flag in the first of two 25-lap races in the speedway's Modified Series.

HITOMS 8-5, FOREST CITY 2-3: The HiToms remained hot, capturing a doubleheader sweep of the Forest City Owls in Coastal Plain League baseball. The HiToms improved to 13-4 in the second half and 29-16 overall. Forest City fell to 5-11 and 23-20.

MARTINSVILLE 3, ASHEBORO 2: The Martinsville Mustangs rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Copperheads. Bobby Greene paced the Mustangs (8-6, 17-22) with a single and two RBIs. Greg Holt and Daniel Wagner collected two hits apiece for Asheboro (4-12, 17-26).
