Y asks for help with school supplies

(updated 3:00 am)

The Greensboro YMCA wants to make sure students have Bright Beginnings by preparing them for a new school year with proper supplies.

Bright Beginnings is an annual YMCA program that provides back-to-school clothes and supplies to deserving children.

"Last year, we were able to help about 325 youths; this year we're shooting for 400," said Lynn Crawford, membership director at Spears YMCA.

To reach that goal, Crawford said they need residents to volunteer to pair with a child and go shopping. Money for school supplies and transportation will be provided by the YMCA.

The YMCA bus will take a group of children, each paired with the special volunteer, on a shopping trip just before school starts.

"The Spears YMCA is planning to take 100 students shopping over three nights," Crawford said.

Individuals and groups are encouraged to volunteer. Donations are also encouraged ($125 outfits a child).

Monetary donations or new, unopened supplies are also welcome, Crawford said.

If you would like to help, call your participating YMCA no later than Aug. 1.

The YMCA branches, dates and shopping locations are:

  • Ragsdale: Aug. 7 and 12, Target (Bridford Parkway)
  • Stoney Creek: Aug. 11 Wal-Mart (Burlington)
  • Bryan: Aug. 12-13, Wal-Mart (South Elm)
  • Spears: Aug. 19-21, Target (New Garden Road)
  • Hayes-Taylor: Aug. 22, Wal-Mart (Cone Boulevard)
