Why the Grasshoppers won: Greensboro took advantage of an error leading off the bottom of the first inning to score three runs and never trailed. Brett Durand took advantage of the early lead and threw six innings of three-hit ball.
Performances worth noting: Greensboro -- Bryan Petersen, 2-for-4, HR, 2R, 4 RBIs; Ryan Curry, HR, 2 RBIs; Durand, 6 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 SO.
Also worth noting: Mike Stanton was not in the lineup as he went home for his brother's wedding. He is expected back for Saturday's game. ... The Hoppers moved to 25-2 on the season when scoring seven or more runs. ... Former Wake Forest baseball coach George Greer is in his first season as the batting coach for the Sand Gnats. ... Savannah's Richard Pena was hit in the face with a pitch in the seventh inning. He was down face-first on the ground for 10 minutes before eventually walking to an EMS truck. The game was delayed 19 minutes after the beaning.
What they said: "You forget about the game and start worrying about the health of the player. ... Talking to their coaches, I think his (injury) is very serious."
