Seniors unaware of programs

The Summerfield Town Council last week reviewed results of the town's senior survey.

Of the 955 surveys sent out, about 22 percent had been returned as of July 1. Inaccurate records of residents over the age of 60 and their addresses led to some surveys being returned as undeliverable.

Although surveys are still trickling in, results show a majority of seniors who responded were unaware of the two existing programs for older residents of the town.

"Communication seems to be the big thing," Mayor Mark Brown said.

Other results from the survey include 21 respondents who said they would need transportation to attend activities. Also, 23 respondents said they would like to volunteer to help seniors.

The town has not yet decided what action to take based on the responses.

In other business, the council also approved initial funding to designate a 9-acre portion of Summerfield Community Park as a protected wildlife habitat.

Signs will designate the area and encourage visitors to stay on the trails and out of the woods.

By joining the program, the town will pledge to make protecting wildlife a priority by providing the four basics that all wildlife need: food, water, cover and places to raise young.
