Adding Sunday to early voting schedule backed

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

GREENSBORO - The Guilford County Board of Elections today voted 2-1 to add a Sunday to the early voting schedule for the fall election.

Early voting begins on Oct. 16 at the Old Guilford County Courthouse in Greensboro and Washington Terrace Park in High Point.

Early voting then takes a break on Saturday, Oct. 18 and will open the following day, Sunday, Oct. 19 at 11 sites across the county. From Oct. 20 to Nov. 1, early voting will follow a Monday-Saturday schedule.

Board member Kathryn Lindley voted against the measure, saying she didn't want church and state to mix.

"What church is going to do is talk about it during the sermon and then head out and go vote," she said.

In other action, the board also voted to split two voting precincts in Guilford County.

No new polling locations have been finalized, but voters who previously voted at Parkwood Baptist Church and live north of West Wendover Avenue will likely move to Hickory Grove United Methodist Church at 5959 Hickory Grove Road. And voters who previously voted at Brightwood Elementary School and live east of U.S. 29 are expected to move to Lebanon Baptist Church at 4635 Hicone Road. The respective churches, Guilford board of elections, North Carolina State Board of Elections and Department of Justice must also approve the new polling locations.
