Three more local students win national scholarships
GREENSBORO — Three more recent graduates of Guilford County's public high schools have won College-Sponsored Merit Scholarships.
That brings the county's 2008 total to nine. The first six local winners were announced in May.
These scholarships are worth anywhere from $500 to $2,000 annually over four years. The scholarships are based on their outstanding academic record, earned SAT scores and an essay describing activities, interests and goals. In addition, a school official endorsed and recommended each scholar.
The three newest winners, their high schools and the colleges they will attend in the fall are:
* Marion E. Driver, The Early College at Guilford, UNC-Chapel Hill
* Sam D. Emrani, Grimsley, Virginia Tech
* Lauren M. Tarpey, Grimsley, University of Chicago
The six winners announced in May were:
* Andy K. Bouchard, Page, Carleton College
* James P. Finnegan, High Point Central, UNC-Chapel Hill
* Robert T. Loftin, The Early College at Guilford, Georgia Tech
* Jordan L. Preuss, Grimsley, University of Chicago
* Brandon M. Reid, Western Guilford, UNC-Chapel Hill
* Judson J. Van Wyk, Northwest Guilford, UNC-Chapel Hill
Each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from the list of finalists in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution. The winners are among 8,300 distinguished high school graduates who will receive Merit Scholarship awards worth $36 million for college undergraduate study.
