Fourth of July Park, 702 W. Mountain Road, Kernersville, could have a new historical building if the town or a community group decides to accept a donation.

Marsha Dixon has offered her late parents' tobacco barn for use at the park. The barn sits at 1321 Whicker Road, formerly owned by R. Wayne and Betty McLain.

Town Manager Curtis Swisher said quotes to dismantle and restore the barn have been as high as $300,000. The cost to move the barn is $160,000 or more.

Town Attorney John Wolfe said a new roof and moving a 17-foot-by-17-foot barn a quarter of a mile cost him $22,000.

Moving the barn to Fourth July Park is about four miles.

Swisher is waiting to hear board members if they would like to accept the gift. Swisher told the board earlier this month that Dixon would like a response as quickly as possible because she has sold her parents' former home and the new owner doesn't want the old barn.

The board also asked the historical society chairman if the society would be interested in the building and would be willing to help raise funds.

In other business, the board passed a resolution thanking the city county utilities commission for its service since 1995, passed an agreement and resolution to upgraded the railroad crossing at Nelson Street, passed a resolution in support of the new public access road at Forsyth Community College's Swisher Campus and approved minutes from May 14, 28 and June 3 meetings.
