Red Cross calls for more blood donations

Wednesday, July 9
( updated 11:25 pm)

The Red Cross needs your blood.

Officials put out a call Wednesday for blood donations, especially types O positive and negative and A positive and negative. The Red Cross is having trouble meeting orders for blood from local hospitals, officials said in a prepared statement.

"Unless donors respond immediately, hospitals may need to cancel elective or non-emergency surgeries," said Robert F. Fechner, chief executive officer, American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region.

A spokesman for Moses Cone said officials there are closely monitoring the supply, but have not made any changes to services offered.

Hospitals can still draw on their own reserve supplies, said Aaron Wall, public relations and marketing manager at High Point Regional Health System.

"It's just not the normal cushion that we like to keep," he said.

The Red Cross has extended hours at the Nussbaum Blood Center, 1501 Yanceyville St.:
