A new study from Verizon Wireless says North Carolina finds itself in the midst of "a text messaging phenomena."
The study of 12 Southeastern states says sending text messages - particularly popular among the teen and college crowds - has jumped more than 600 percent in the last 24 months among Tar Heel customers.
Turns out that Greensboro is the state's second "textiest city" - at 76.91 million messages sent in April - behind Charlotte (103 million) and just ahead of Shelby (76.9 million) .
Overall that month, North Carolina ranked fourth with 526.9 million messages, behind Tennessee (991.7 million) , Texas (769.1 million) and Georgia (683.6 million) .
The region's customers totaled 4.1 billion messages in April.
To assist the text-messaging impaired, Verizon's new release included a 24-page "TXTionary."
