N.C. House OKs ban on video slot machines
The state House approved a measure to ban sweepstakes-based video slot machines on a 116-1 vote. The measure now goes to the state Senate, which could grant it final approval this week.
Rep. Earl Jones of Guilford County was the only member of the House to vote against the ban, saying that the state shouldn't crack down on what is now a legal business.
"This appears to be a little bit of government over-reaching and government intrusion," Jones said.
Other members of the legislature said the video slot operators had found a loophole in a 2006 law that banned video poker machines. This bill would close that loophole.
