Helping women find their purpose

Helping women find their purpose

Greensboro resident Marilyn G. Brooks wants to help area residents find their purpose.

Brooks uses her background in education and human development to conduct a series of seminars under the moniker Everyday Women With a Purpose.

"The goal is to assist women to move from where they are to where they desire to be in addition to finding their purpose and assignment," Brooks said.

"I conduct the workshops to expose some of the common barriers women face in finding their purpose and assignment."

Brooks, a Greensboro native, graduated from UNCG with a degree in human development and family studies.

She received her teaching licenses from Greensboro College and is the curriculum facilitator at Nathanael Greene Elementary School in Liberty.

The idea for Everyday Women With a Purpose began with Brooks' own quest to find her true self and purpose.

"I had a poor self-concept. I didn't know who I was," she said.

"I felt there was something more to myself and so I had to turn inward to find out who I was."

During that self-discovery, Brooks realized that she is also a person outside of being a wife, mother and friend.

"I was held captive in a lost identity," she said.

Brooks also realized that she is an educator, writer and motivational speaker.

That personal experience has now morphed into Brooks' ministries: Everyday Women With a Purpose and Everyday People With a Purpose.

"I knew that if I had these questions, surely someone else did," she said.

She was right. Brooks started facilitating workshops for small groups and is now presenting free workshops in the Greensboro Library locations.

The only cost is the purchase of the workbooks.

Her next workshop, "Self-Acceptance," will be from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Saturday at the Hemphill Branch Library.
