Tar Heels will play on New Year's Eve
North Carolina basketball fans can start making New Year's Eve plans - for a spot in front of a TV.
The Tar Heels will play Dec. 31 at Nevada on one of the ESPN networks. The time and channel haven't been announced, but Nevada spokeswoman Rhonda Lundin said it's expected to be a night game.
The Wolf Pack, who played last season at Chapel Hill, released its schedule Wednesday. UNC hasn't released its schedule.
INDIANA: The Hoosiers will give up two basketball scholarships for the upcoming season in anticipation of penalties related to the NCAA's academic progress rate, an assistant athletics director confirmed.
TENNESSEE: The school signed football coach Phillip Fulmer and basketball coach Bruce Pearl to contracts that could keep them there through 2014.
Fulmer's deal is worth an average of nearly $3 million for seven seasons. He will get $2.4 million for the upcoming season, and his salary will escalate to $3.3 million in 2014 with automatic raises of $150,000 annually. Pearl's contract increases his salary to an average of $2.3 million a year. He made $1.3 million last season.
OTHER COACHES: Georgia baseball coach David Perno earned a raise and a five-year contract after leading the Bulldogs to a runner-up finish in the College World Series. Perno will earn $450,000 per season. ... The College of Charleston is set to name South Carolina assistant Monte Lee as its baseball coach. He will replace John Pawlowski, who went to Auburn.
VIRGINIA TECH: Brandon Dillard, a redshirt junior wide receiver expected to contend for significant playing time, will miss the season after suffering a ruptured right Achilles tendon in offseason workouts.
GEORGIA: Defensive end Michael Lemon has been charged with a felony stemming from a fight last weekend with another student.
