Less than a year after lobbying Kernersville to allow a pet day care business in town limits, Dog-Gone Fun owner Jan Wilson has requested - and received - another change.
Because of customer requests, Wilson wants overnight stays allowed at pet day cares.
"We want to offer clients a familiar place to leave their dogs when the need arises," she said.
When seeking approval last fall, Wilson said the day care would not allow overnight stays. But in response to requests, Wilson now wants to offer boarding services as an extension to the day care and training Dog-Gone Fun already offers.
"This will help us remain competitive in the industry," she said, noting similar facilities in Winston-Salem and Greensboro.
Passed unanimously by the Board of Aldermen on Tuesday night, the amendment now allows pet day care businesses to use up to 15 percent of their building space for overnight boarding. All animals must be crated indoors during the evening. Facility hours are limited to 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and must be monitored by an off-campus security system.
Wilson plans to set up a Web camera to monitor the business at night.
The facility is at 203 Berry Garden Road . For information, contact the business at 993-2178 or info@doggonefunnc.com.
In other business, the board:
• approved a request by Andrew and Becky Coney to rezone 13.38 acres at the southeast corner of Shields Road and Beeson Road to allow single family homes with a minimum lot size of 12,000 square feet.
The developers plan to build 40 units in the subdivision, The Village at Celtic Crossing. The subdivision will have strict housing standards: Houses will be brick, stone and HardiPlank material; house size will be a minimum of 1,800 square feet and will not exceed two stories; and all homes will have two-car garages.
The applicants are required to provided a buffer containing three deciduous and 13 evergreen trees between the property and the Tredegar subdivision.
• approved a request by Gary Gerber to rezone 1.15 acres at 1900 W. Mountain St. from residential single family homes to general industrial with a special use. Gerber wants to create a parking lot for trucks making deliveries to OTD Recyclers and a picnic area for employees.
Gerber is required to provide buffers along the edge of the parking lot and between the business and Gene Ambrose's property at 113 Fulp Road.
• approved a request by Oswald Development Co. to rezone 1.76 acres at 1020 S. Main St. to highway business to allow a food or drug store. A Walgreens is proposed for the location.
• heard from Horace Spencer, representing Arby's, 1015 S. Main St. He said a proposed median on Main Street will affect the restaurant's business. The median will be from Shopping Center Drive/Masten Drive to the Food Lion entrance. The board explained that the road is owned by the state Department of Transportation and medians along Main Street have been planned for years. The board said Spencer would need to speak with the department to ask for reconsideration of the median at that location. And, the board noted, Century Boulevard could also serve to direct traffic to the restaurant's back door in the future.
