RALEIGH (AP) - North Carolina's first lady has received an $80,000 raise that almost doubles her salary at North Carolina State University as her duties there expand.
Mary Easley, a lawyer and the wife of Gov. Mike Easley, is an executive in residence and senior lecturer at the university in Raleigh. School personnel records show her salary jumped to $170,000 from $90,000, effective July 1.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday that the school's top academic officer, Larry Nielsen, defended the raise. He said it's "within the range" of N.C. State employees with similar jobs. The Carolina Journal first reported the raise.
Mary Easley's job involves the development and direction of N.C. State's principal speakers program, called the Millennium Seminar Series. Among her new duties is directing development of the Public Safety Leadership Initiative.
