GREENSBORO - More charges were added today against a man accused of shooting a Greensboro police officer last Friday night.

Treymayne Donte Jackson, 22 of 1579 Lovette St. is accused of shooting officer M.E. Merritt in the stomach behind John's Curb Market at 2000 E. Market St.

Jackson was captured early Saturday morning and charged with first-degree attempted murder. Police said the round hit Meritt in his bullet-proof vest and he was treated and released for minor injuries.

Today, Greensboro police investigators filed charges of assaulting a police officer with a firearm against Jackson, accusing him of shooting at Officer P.W. Wright, according to arrest warrants. Warrants state Jackson shot at Wright five times with a firearm.

Jackson was also charged with possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell or distribute for allegedly having 17 individually packaged bags of marijuana when he was arrested.

Police said the incident began when the two officers, who are assigned to the Tactical Special Enforcement Unit that aims to curb drugs and robbery-related crimes, approached a man behind the store and spoke with him briefly.

A short fight broke out between the man and officers, and the man pulled out a handgun and shot Merritt.

Both officers, who were in uniform, returned fire as the man fled, police said.

The new charges carried a $750,000 bond, bringing Jackson's total bond amount to $900,000.
