— A man under surveillance by police died in an apparent suicide Tuesday morning, a police official said.

At 9:30 a.m., police were assisting the Secret Service in the surveillance of a man accused of financial fraud against the elderly throughout the Triad, Greensboro police Capt. Gary Hastings said.

A police officer in an unmarked car stopped a white Cadillac Escalade in a parking lot across from the Koury Convention Center, just past the intersection of High Point and Pinecroft roads, Hastings said.

The man in the Escalade apparently shot himself before officers could approach the vehicle, Hastings said. The man was taken to Moses Cone Hospital but was dead on arrival.

The man's name was not being released until his next of kin could be notified.

Police will conduct a homicide investigation and the department's Internal Affairs unit also will investigate, which is typical procedure, Hastings said.

Police and the Secret Service often work together in solving financial crimes, Hastings said.

According to the Secret Service's Web site, part of the agency's investigative responsibilities are crimes that involve financial fraud. The agency's founding mission is safeguarding the payment and financial systems of the United States.

Officials with the Secret Service's Greensboro field office declined to comment on their role in the investigation.
