RAMSEUR - Western Guilford's Cinderella season ended in the second round of the playoffs due to turnovers, dropped passes and penalties.

And a stout Eastern Randolph defense.

The Wildcats came up with four interceptions and held the Hornets to 56 yards rushing en route to a 45-13 win Friday night.

The first play of the game from scrimmage was a harbinger of things to come for Western Guilford, as a bad snap led to a 10-yard loss.

Meanwhile, the Wildcats jumped out to a 10-0 lead.

"They got momentum early, got ahead of us early and took us out of being more balanced with the running game," Western Guilford coach Chris Causey said. "They forced us into throwing quite a bit."

The Hornets threw 48 passes. Cory McKenna completed 20 for 236 yards, but there were numerous drops and four interceptions.

Meanwhile, Eastern Randolph senior Jarrod Bowman excelled in all phases of the game. He had three touchdown catches, an interception and a blocked field goal. He also found time to hold on extra-point attempts.

"He's the only starter we had returning from last year," said Wildcats coach Burton Cates of Bowman. "We know Jarrod can make plays and he just didn't want this to be his last game."

Bowman's outstanding night almost overshadowed a breakout game from sophomore quarterback Zebulon Milliner. After not throwing for more than one touchdown pass in any game this season, Milliner had four TD tosses and 237 yards passing on the night.

"He handled himself very well," Cates said. "The passes he needed to make, he made them. He had faith in the receivers to come down with them. But for a sophomore, I thought he played very well."

Eastern (9-4) advances to play number-one seed Oxford Webb in the third round of the playoffs.

Western Guilford (7-6) rebounded from a 2-9 season to post its second winning record this decade.

"Our kids played hard," Causey said. "I'm proud of our kids. We did some good things but they were the better team tonight."
