Holliday Circle: Now we're going places

It goes 'round and 'round, points to a bar in all directions and leads ... nowhere in particular.

Naming rights are now open to honor whatever public figure you'd like. Inside Scoop started with some, but you can do better. Send us your ideas at the Debatables blog.

We're talking, of course, about Holliday Circle — the newly named traffic roundabout on Greene Street in downtown Greensboro. The City Council voted unanimously last week to name the circle after outgoing Mayor Keith Holliday, during whose term downtown (and downtown nightlife) began to flourish.

A metaphor for his eight years as mayor? Keith, we're kidding. Can we call you Keith, now, Mr. Mayor?

His honor got Scoop thinking: What other things around town would make the best tributes to our elected leaders?

The T. Dianne Bellamy-Small Fax Machine: For the Greensboro councilwoman's outstanding contributions to the practice of nonverbal communications with the media.

The Dot Kearns Historical Museum: To honor the long, long-time member of the Guilford County Board of Education and her long, long tales of long, long ago.

The Skip Alston-Billy Yow Recreation Center: In east Greensboro ... no, southeast Guilford County ... absolutely not, the city ... dang it, the country. Anyway, it would house a hockey rink, a boxing ring, a simulated chariot race and other blood sports for people who beat each other up for grins and giggles.

Goldie Wells Memorial Church of God in Christ: Named for Greensboro Councilwoman Goldie Wells. Hey, she's already a member of the church, across the street from Bennett College. Why not just add the "Goldie"?

The Tom Phillips Dam: (The -n is optional.) For the outgoing councilman's support of drinking water and his vigorous — and we mean vigorous — opposition to economic incentives.
