Candidates rack up $344,000

(Updated Saturday, July 19, 2008 - 11:41 pm)

GREENSBORO — City Council candidates have raised more than $344,000 this election cycle.

(Now pause and do a double-take.)

That's enough to cover half the unpaid overtime the city owes to police recruits.

Instead, a slew of developers, real estate brokers and political interest groups lavished their favorite candidates with cash.

The election is Tuesday. Candidates filed their reports with the Guilford County Board of Elections this week.

The maximum anyone can donate to a candidate is $4,000.

Not every candidate filed a report. Those who didn't plan to raise more than $3,000 during their campaign weren't required to file paperwork.

One bit of interest on spending: Mayoral candidate Milton Kern's campaign spent more than $30,000 with a consulting firm in Seattle.

Kern and his campaign manager, Stacey Ofsanko, said Friday they selected the out-of-state consultant to create direct-mail ads because he could provide a quick turnaround.

"Remember," Kern said, "we just started 31/2 months ago."

The list includes donations from people, not loans candidates made to their campaigns, from late September to late October. Occupations are listed as described on the reports.
