Relief quarterback propels Virginia Tech past Duke

DURHAM -- Sean Glennon felt like he'd been stuck on the Virginia Tech sideline forever after losing his starting quarterback job. On Saturday, he played like he doesn't plan on going back.

The junior threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns in relief of injured Tyrod Taylor while the No. 12 Hokies' defense shut down Duke yet again in a 43-14 win, keeping Virginia Tech (6-1, 3-0) unbeaten in the ACC.

Eddie Royal and Branden Ore also scored touchdowns for the Hokies during a 21-point second quarter. The Blue Devils (1-6, 0-4) have lost seven straight to Virginia Tech.

It started with Glennon, who played with the kind of edge he failed to show before being benched after two games.

"Watching those last four or five games from the sideline was real tough," said Glennon, who completed 16 of 21 passes. "But after the initial disappointment, I just told myself, 'I've got to stay ready for when they need me.' And today, they needed me."

Taylor, the freshman who replaced Glennon in the third game, left early in the second quarter with a sprained right ankle. Glennon entered the game with Virginia Tech leading 13-7.

On his first possession, Glennon went 4-for-4 for 69 yards on a drive that ended with Kenny Lewis Jr.'s 5-yard scoring run. Then, after Duke went three-and-out, Glennon found Royal for an easy 25-yard score on the right side to make it 27-7 with 6:40 left in the half.

Ore's 2-yard score after Stephan Virgil's blocked punt made it 34-7 less than a minute later.

"He's a competitor," coach Frank Beamer said of Glennon. "He worked hard and is smart. We needed him today, and he came through."
