RALEIGH (AP) Federal authorities say 93 foreign nationals have been arrested in North Carolina as part of a three-month nationwide sweep of violent gang activity.
The U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement says authorities made 50 arrests in the Raleigh area and 43 in Winston-Salem. The agency says they face federal criminal charges or deportation.
Immigation and Customs agents partnered with local law enforcement agencies nationwide to arrest 1,313 violent street gang members, associates and illegal immigrants in 19 states over the summer.
North Carolina agencies taking part in Operation Community Shield included the Alamance County Sheriff's Office, the Gaston County Sheriff's Office, the Raleigh Police Department, the Wake County Sheriff's Office and the Durham Police Department.
