Spin shatters world record

For 111 hours, 11 minutes and 11 seconds, Joey Motsay rode his stationary bike.

On the 12th second, he broke the Guinness World Record for Longest Spinning/Static Cycling Marathon. And then he kept going.

Motsay, 44, started his ride at 5 a.m. Sept. 22 at Positive Stress Workout, which he owns. The event raised money for Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test, an organization that seeks to combat breast cancer through early detection and prevention.

The organization's founder Martha Kaley met Motsay through her membership at his workout club.

Like last year's event, the spinning marathon raised about $25,000. This year, Motsay said, the goal was to fund a research grant and use the attention-grabbing gimmick of a world record attempt to garner attention for the organization.

"We thought this year it'd be a good thing to raise the bar by doing something a little more on the obnoxious side," Motsay said Friday, the seventh day of his ride.

Motsay ended his ride about 2 p.m. Saturday.

"Joey Motsay is just a superhuman human being," said Kara McBurney, event coordinator for Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test.

Other cyclists joined in on the action through "Take a Spin With Friends" from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday, paying $30 to ride a bike for one hour.

Motsay was allowed five minutes per hour to break, which he could accumulate and use to take showers or a nap. He had to maintain an average speed of at least 12 miles per hour.

The hardest part, he and others involved said, was adhering to Guinness' strict rules.

"It's been a mammoth effort," said Peter Kotting, a volunteer who put in more than 40 hours. Kotting noted that more than 200 volunteers were needed to serve as witnesses -- Guinness requires two at all times -- and the medical personnel who were required to keep watch.

Motsay cited monotony as one problem of stationary biking and said he had to be prepared to deal with the issues before he started.

"You have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable."
