GREENSBORO -- For the third straight year, the Souper Bowl was close until the very end.
And for the third straight year Guilford pulled out a victory over Greensboro.
Josh Vogelbach completed 48 of 79 passes for 422 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Quakers to a 41-35 victory over the Pride before 4,462 -- a Greensboro College attendance record -- at Jamieson Stadium on Saturday night.
Admission to the game was free with a donation of items collected for local food banks.
Seven of Vogelbach's completions came on Guilford's last drive, which allowed the Quakers to move the chains and run out the clock without allowing the Pride another chance to score.
The Quakers were forced to pass on that last drive after picking up only 3 yards on their first two running plays.
"My offensive line probably played their best game of the year," Vogelbach said. "(Greensboro) was blitzing from everywhere, but they gave me time. We have to do what the other team lets us do."
The Pride nearly completed a furious rally.
Trailing 41-16 with 4:08 to play in the third quarter, Greensboro scored on Mike Caparaso's 15-yard touchdown pass to Torrey Lowe.
Lowe scored again early in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard run to make the score 41-29.
The Pride got the ball back again and cut it to less than a touchdown on Caparaso's 31-yard scoring pass to Tim Bagamary to make the score 41-35 with 5:38 left.
But the efficient Vogelbach wouldn't let the Pride have a chance at taking the lead.
"It's just unbelievable," Guilford coach Kevin Keisel said. "No one can take a lead and keep a lead in this series. Both sides played with their hearts."
Vogelbach's efforts set school records for attempts and completions. The 48 completions tied him for fourth all time on the NCAA Division III list, and the 79 attempts were good for third all-time.
Vogelbach now has 99 career touchdown passes and has beaten the Pride all three times he has faced them.
"Records don't matter to me. Just the scoreboard," Vogelbach said. "No matter how good or how bad we are, it's going to come down to the end" when playing Greensboro.
Lowe kept the Pride in it for most of the game. Lining up at both running back and quarterback, Lowe had 66 yards rushing and a touchdown, 75 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and he returned a kickoff 79 yards for a score.
"I saw an opening and I just went for it. I saw the kicker closing in on me, so I stiff-armed him and kept going," Lowe said. "That's the first time they have kicked the ball to me when we've played them. The first half we came out flat, but in the second half we played with our hearts."
