ELON (AP) — A new poll out shows Hillary Clinton and Fred Thompson ahead among the presidential candidates in North Carolina.

The Elon University poll has Clinton with a 2-to-1 advantage over North Carolina's John Edwards and Barack Obama among Democratic hopefuls, while Thompson has a slight lead over Rudy Giuliani.

Sen. Elizabeth Dole registered a 50 percent job approval rating, compared to 25 percent who disapproved. Dole faces re-election next year but no Democrats have announced plans to run against her.

In next year's gubernatorial race, Beverly Perdue leads Richard Moore among the Democrats, although more than a third who responded said they hadn't made up their mind. Two-thirds of Republicans surveyed didn't know whom they would support on the GOP side.

The Elon poll surveyed 664 residents earlier this week.
