GREENSBORO — Three Grimsley High School students face charges of assault inflicting serious bodily injury after police say they initiated an unprovoked attack on another student Monday.

Cecil Akeem Davis, 16, of 1323 S. Ashe St., and Zachary Alexander Barnes, 16, of 3004 Peebles Drive, were in the Guilford County Jail on $5,000 bond Wednesday.

The name of the third student was not released because he is under 16.

Police say the three students jumped and beat a 14-year-old freshman at random, according to arrest records.

"The defendants did not know him, and he suffered a broken cheek bone," the records say. "It was broken in three places."

Police said the incident was not gang-related.

"There's lots of rumors out there," said Marc Ridgill, a school resource officer at Grimsley.

"It's not gang-related. There was no weapon involved."

Barnes said he was frustrated because of an in-school suspension earlier in the day and was overheard by the two other students saying he wanted to fight someone.

"I was just mad because of the teachers," said Barnes, who was brought by his parents to the jail to be processed Wednesday. "I went off the top of my head."

Barnes said that he knew neither the victim nor the others charged and that the attack was not planned.

Davis' mother, Judieth Browne, said she believes her son got caught up in the fight.

"I told him to keep away from these boys," Browne said. "I sent him there to learn."

In an unrelated incident, two female students at Page High School could face charges for a fight Tuesday, police Sgt. D.J. Davis said.

The fight was a spillover of long-standing friction in the community, Davis said.

"It's just a group of people having issues for the past couple of years, and they're trying to resolve it," Davis said.
