Jasper Brinkley, a standout linebacker at South Carolina, will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury.

Brinkley, the team's leading tackler from a year ago and on the preseason watch lists for the Lombardi and Butkus awards, suffered a right knee sprain Saturday during the Gamecocks' 28-16 loss at No. 2 LSU. Coach Steve Spurrier said Monday that the team expects to get a medical waiver from the NCAA so Brinkley, a senior, can play next year. Spurrier said Brinkley would need about three months of rehabilitation after surgery.

Brinkley made 21 tackles this season and led the team with two interceptions.

MICHIGAN: Quarterback Chad Henne has received medical clearance to play again, but coach Lloyd Carr wouldn't say whether Henne or freshman Ryan Mallett would start Saturday at Northwestern. Mallett has started two games while Henne recovered from a knee injury.

Wide receiver LaTerryal Savoy also was reinstated after being acquitted of an indecent exposure charge, Carr said. Savoy, 21, of Mamou, La., had been accused of exposing himself to a woman inside Michigan Stadium.

ARIZONA STATE: Quarterback Rudy Carpenter apologized for swearing during a live radio interview after the Sun Devils' victory over Oregon State. The interview was posted on YouTube, and as of Monday afternoon the audio clip had been played more than 1,100 times.

COLORADO STATE: Safety Klint Kubiak, son of Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak, was released from a hospital following tests that showed he had low blood pressure and a bleeding ulcer. Kubiak dropped to a knee following pregame warm-ups Saturday at Houston.

UCLA: Ben Olson is back as quarterback for UCLA, and Patrick Cowan is out again. Cowan, who helped the Bruins beat Washington last weekend, has a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee and will be sidelined for about three weeks. After missing the first three games of the season because of a hamstring injury, Cowan got the start against the Huskies because Olson had recurring headaches following the loss at Utah and didn't practice last week.

INDIANA STATE: The Sycamores fired coach Lou West and rehired former coach Dennis Raetz as interim coach. West was 0-4 this season, 1-25 since taking over the team in 2005.
