No players fought Saturday when Miami beat Florida International 23-9, unlike last season's infamous brawl. To be safe, the ACC sent its top referee, Jack Childress, to keep order, and his crew set a strict tone. There were four 15-yard penalties in the first quarter alone. For the game, the teams were flagged 22 times for 176 yards.

"There was a lot of emphasis on sportsmanship," Miami offensive lineman Derrick Morse said. "It was pretty clean."

FEMALE OFFICIAL: Line judge Sarah Thomas became the first female official to work a game in the NCAA's highest division when Jacksonville State played at Memphis. Thomas, a veteran Mississippi high school official, was assigned to the game by Conference USA.

SUL ROSS STATE: Mike Flynt, a 59-year-old linebacker, suited up but remained on the sideline during Sul Ross State's 55-14 loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor. Leg and shoulder problems kept Flynt from traveling to the first two games.
