Storm wreaks havoc in Triad

GREENSBORO — The remnants of Hurricane Humberto caused havoc Friday, prompting multiple tornado warnings and canceling many evening events but doing little to relieve drought conditions statewide.

The National Weather Service confirmed that two tornadoes hit the area, the first in Clemmons at 2:15 p.m. and another just north of Lexington along N.C. 52 shortly after 4 p.m. No injuries were reported from either storm.

Numerous reports of funnel clouds tied up emergency lines throughout Friday evening.

Meteorologist Jeff Orrock said wind damage was limited mostly to Forsyth County from Clemmons to Winston-Salem, with flooding problems centering primarily in Raleigh.

Duke Energy reported few power outages from the storm.

The storm dropped about a half-inch of rain throughout much of Greensboro by 9 p.m. Friday — a mere splash in the annual deficit.
Much of the state remains under severe drought conditions, with Greensboro showing an 11-inch shortfall.

"It will put a little water in the reservoir," Orrock said. "We need events like this every week to relieve any of the drought conditions. It’s not even a drop in the bucket."

A tornado warning about 3 p.m. forced Guilford County Schools to instruct schools not to load students on buses. The school system later canceled all evening events, including high school football games.

Most games were postponed until tonight  or Monday.

Orrock said most of the lingering showers should clear out early this morning, setting forth much cooler temperatures throughout next week.

Temperatures are expected in the low 80s today and will dip into the 50s overnight as a cold front passes through the area.

"No more 90s — next week will be noticeably cooler and dry," Orrock said. "We are going below normal temperatures."
