Summerfield seeks public input on highway relocation

Summerfield officials will hold a public workshop with the Greensboro Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Sept. 25 to discuss the possible relocation of a portion of N.C. 150.

The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. at the Summerfield Community Center.

The portion being considered extends from U.S. 220 westward to Bunch Road at N.C. 150 (Old Oak Ridge Road) and from N.C. 150 southward to Bunch Road.

Craig McKinney with MPO said the area has been identified for relocation to make N.C. 150 more continuous. The highway breaks at U.S. 220 and requires commuters to travel a mile north or south to get back on N.C. 150.

"We're doing a feasibility study -- basically it was requested by the Town of Summerfield to see if it was feasible to do," McKinney said. "It's been ... on our thoroughfare plan for many years."

If the project is considered feasible, information will be forwarded to the State Transportation Improvement Program for further analysis.

That includes an intense review from federal highway officials, the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, McKinney said. A chart showing the various steps in the process will be on display at the meeting, McKinney said.

The workshop is the second of two meetings on the study.
