NEW YORK -- Greensboro's John Isner will have the honor of playing two No. 1 seeds in three days at the U.S. Open.
The Page graduate teamed with Scott Oudsema on Thursday and lost 6-4, 6-3 to the No. 1 doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan in the first round.
He'll play Roger Federer, the No. 1 singles seed, on Saturday.
The buzz already was starting around the grounds for the Isner-Federer match. Andy Roddick, who beat Isner in straight sets in the final at Washington, was asked to provide a scouting report.
"Isner's going to be very tall," he said, "and Roger's going to be very good."
Roddick bounced back Thursday to beat Jose Acasuso 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 when a bad knee forced the Argentine to stop playing.
"That's not the way you want to get through," Roddick said.
Still, he joined fellow former Open champions Martina Hingis and Svetlana Kuznetsova in reaching the third round.
Maria Sharapova overwhelmed 90th-ranked Casey Dellacqua 6-1, 6-0 in a mere 51 minutes.
Donald Young advanced to the third round when his foe, No. 13 Richard Gasquet, withdrew, citing a viral infection.
