The Guilford County Sheriff's Office is on the lookout for a man who fled following a short chase Tuesday afternoon.
Detectives on routine surveillance around Laurel Street and U.S. 29 noticed a man acting suspicious before leaving the area in a white 1993 Ford Crown Victoria about 1:45 p.m., Col. Randy Powers said.
A registration database check revealed the license plate did not match the vehicle, which led to a short pursuit that ended minutes later when the man crashed into a telephone pole at the intersection of Textile and Tucker streets. The man fled on foot.
The impact cracked a telephone pole and sent a power line to the ground.
"He ran for something, but I'm not sure it was (the tags)," Powers said. "To be (that) jumpy, something wasn't right."
Deputies are still searching for the suspect, described as a black male, 5-foot-6-inches tall, about 200 pounds, with short dreadlocks. The man was wearing a white shirt and dark pants.
If caught, he faces a number of charges including speeding to elude, failure to heed blue lights and having a fictitious registration, among other charges, Powers said.
No injuries were reported.
