JAMESTOWN - After a week of cross-town vandalism, Southwest Guilford and Ragsdale renewed their rivalry Friday at Ragsdale's Kenneth T. Miller Memorial Stadium.
In a back and forth battle, the Tigers (2-0) capitalized on late mistakes from Southwest to reel off 14 straight points and claim a 29-15 victory.
"It's always a big game when we play them," Ragsdale coach Tommy Norwood said. "We took advantage of a couple mistakes that they made but that's what's going to happen in a high school football game."
After Southwest (1-1) linebacker Brandon Mercer intercepted a Matt Heavner pass and drove to the Ragsdale 10-yard line in the fourth quarter, the Tigers' defense responded. Carvel Austin picked off Cory Brown's pass and ran it all the way back to the Cowboys' 10 where Brown brought him down from behind.
Facing fourth-and-goal from the 9 three plays later, Ragsdale set up for a field goal but holder Tim Romer scrambled right and lobbed the ball up to a wide open Ian Jenkins in the back of the end zone. The Tigers, who never trailed in the game, reclaimed the lead, 22-15.
"I didn't call it," Norwood said. "One of our coaches who calls the special teams plays called it. When I saw him throw it my heart hit my kneecaps but it was a good call. He earned his $1.50 he made tonight."
After the teams exchanged three-and-outs, the Cowboys drove back down the field and were threatening to score before two costly penalties pushed them back to first-and-20 at the Ragsdale 46. Antonio Gilyard's second interception sealed the win and running back Sean Cathey scored his second touchdown just before the clock ran out for the final margin.
"We made some crucial mistakes down there at the end and we weren't able to overcome them," Southwest coach Scott Schwarzer said. "For this rivalry being as big as it is, I'm really proud of the way our kids responded. We're going to keep working and we're going to get better."
