GREENSBORO - An embattled city councilwoman easily survived a special recall election Tuesday as supporters hit the polls of southeast Greensboro in a bid to save her political career. Dianne Bellamy-Small received 937 votes, or 58.3 percent, compared to 670 favoring her ouster.

Bellamy-Small, 55, will be part of a five-candidate primary on Oct. 9 in her bid to retain the District 1 seat on the Greensboro City Council. The other candidates are James W. Carpenter Jr., Tonya Clinkscale, Charles Dayton Coffey and Luther T. Falls Jr. The top two vote-getters will square off in the general election Nov. 6.

Bellamy-Small rallied her base of supporters in recent months as critics, whose "Recall Small" petition over the spring forced the Tuesday recall election, remained largely quiet. Even had Bellamy-Small been forced from office, she still would remain a candidate for the same seat.
