PILOT PEN: John Isner of Greensboro, a former All-American at Georgia and runner-up in the NCAA singles championship this year, was one of several top young U.S. players to receive a wild card to the Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven, Conn.

The 6-foot-9 Page graduate will play in a featured match tonight against Benjamin Becker of Germany.

Isner, a 22-year-old ATP Tour rookie who lost in the finals in Washington to Andy Roddick a few weeks ago, said people should not expect that he or 18-year-old Donald Young, or 19-year-old Sam Querrey are about to become the next Roddick, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras.

"We're probably not going to see that again, where American players are winning slams left and right," Isner said, "especially with Roger Federer playing so well."

Young won his first ATP Tour match Sunday, beating fellow American Amer Delic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in New Haven, Conn.

"I'm just relieved," said Young, a kid from Atlanta who won the Wimbledon juniors title last month. "This is my 12th match and the first one that I've won."

Young will face top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko in the second round. Like Isner, Young has been granted a wild card to play in the U.S. Open next week.

MORE PILOT PEN: In the WTA draw, fifth-seeded Patty Schnyder lost in the first round to Francesca Schiavone 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-4. Schnyder was ahead 3-0 and two breaks in the third set, when Schiavone called out a trainer to massage her right shoulder.

"It was pretty ugly, I have to say," said Schnyder, who was irked by the move and said it "completely" disrupted her game.

Schiavone came back and won the set in a tiebreaker.

"I said to Patty, 'Sorry for this,' but I couldn't serve," she said.

ROGERS CUP: Top-ranked Justine Henin defeated Jelena Jankovic 7-6 (3), 7-5 to win in Montreal, her first tournament since losing in the semifinals at Wimbledon.

It was the sixth title of the season for Henin, who has won all seven meetings against the third-ranked Jankovic.
