For 11 years, Summerfield has celebrated its first settlers with its annual Founders Day Parade.

Tuesday night the town council will consider a resolution supporting naming the future Interstate 73 though the area after town founder Charles Bruce.

The namesake of Bruce's Crossroads, the American Revolution leader recruited militia and served in local and revolutionary government.

According to local legend, early in the 19th century, Bruce approved a name change to Summerfield, in honor of evangelist John Summerfield. Any measure supporting the naming of the interstate would require approval from the state to become official.

Among other business, the council will:

• Hold public introductions of the 13 candidates running in town elections this November.

• Hold a public hearing and consider a resolution regarding the town's change of government referendum to be added to November's ballot.

• Hear a presentation from the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments regarding the proposed Haw River/Jordan Lake Watershed Protection Rules and vote on a resolution opposing the rules.

• Consider an offer from Piedmont Land Conservancy to pave Vineyard Greenway.

• Consider a contract with Westcott Engineering for final engineering and bid oversight for Phase II of the Summerfield Community Park.

• Consider allowing town staff to bid and construct a park storage/office facility at Summerfield Community Park.

• Consider the Local Update of Census Addresses for the 2010 census.

• Consider the Town of Summerfield Cafeteria Plan Documents.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Summerfield Community Center, 5404 Centerfield Road.
