Mayor Keith Holliday made an important move last week in launching a new planning process for development around Piedmont Triad International Airport. He asked city staff to form a committee made up of City Council members, county commissioners and airport authority members. Representation from High Point shouldn't be forgotten, however.
There's no doubt that much of the Triad's growth will flow from the airport. The FedEx hub opening in 2009 will make sure of that. The question is whether growth will be managed wisely enough to maximize the area's tremendous economic potential.
The easiest decision should be to exclude further residential development from the airport area. Homes and airport traffic don't mix.
Beyond that, even business development should be carefully controlled. The extensive transportation network of airport, highways and rail lines is an asset that can lure companies that rely on rapid movement of materials and products. It makes sense to preserve this proximity for companies that can take best advantage of it.
There are always uncertainties and compromises when it comes to managing growth. However, doing this right is critical. Success depends on cooperation across local jurisdictions, inside and outside Guilford County. The mayor's initiative recognizes the need to get started.
