Up all night: Garlic propels DJ toward record

Five days without sleep might produce a haggard, unshaven zombie.

But with the help of bee pollen and raw garlic, disc jockey Johnny Walker looked alert but calm after 105 hours in the WUAG radio studio.

His face was not clean-shaven, but it looked like a five o'clock shadow— not a five-day beard.

And he doesn't have a scientific answer for popping cloves of garlic instead of NoDoz, but he said it gives him energy.

"I love the way it makes me feel," he said.

Walker, 39, is on target for breaking the Guinness World Record today for the longest radio DJ marathon once he passes 125 hours at 11 a.m.

But he won't stop there.

He will endure about two more days of cold showers in the Taylor Theatre building at UNCG — and maybe another surprise.

"We might have a little something up our sleeve," he said.

He has moved into the studio with his vitamins, bananas and bottles of water.

Walker, a former WQFS announcer, also brought along

"The Six Million Dollar Man" theme and some other old vinyls for the show.

The music selection has spanned decades and included such artists as Mr. Rogers and Donny Osmond, and genres such as big band and heavy metal.

Electronica was set for 11 p.m. Friday, but Walker planned to play it earlier if his eyes started to droop.

His love for music keeps him up, along with adrenaline and the people who have shown support.

Friday morning, though, he struggled and tried to nap for a couple of minutes.

"It was almost out of control," he said.
