NY ATHLETIC CLUB 4, TRIAD UNITED ACES 2: Amy Carnell and Jennifer Kennedy scored goals, but the Greensboro-based Triad United Aces lost the championship match of the U.S. Adult Soccer Association's National Amateur Cup on Sunday in Seattle, Wash.

Carnell, a UNCG alumna from Seattle, had three goals over the weekend for the Aces, a team of 16 players ages 15 to 29. She scored twice in a semifinal victory over Region II champ Saint Louis Soccer Club.

Kennedy, who coaches at Northwest Guilford, is also a UNCG alumna. Current UNCG players Katherine Ryan, Jamie Corti, Heather Mitrisin, Heather Deutschle and Jessica Patterson also play for the Aces, who won the Region III title in Fayetteville to advance to the final four in Seattle. The Aces finished 8-2.

"We won the State Cup the year before, and didn't win a game after that," Aces coach Craig Fedor said. "We were definitely considered the Cinderella team out here. When we beat St. Louis, they had just knocked off the two-time defending national champs. The girls gave a really good show, and I'm proud of them."

Women's Basketball

UNITED STATES 99, SWEDEN 57: Jasmine Thomas scored 13 points -- one of five U.S. players in double figures -- and Krystal Thomas had four points and four rebounds off the bench as the Americans (9-0) opened with a 21-5 scoring run and won the gold-medal game at the FIBA Under-19 World Championships in Slovakia.

Both Thomases are incoming freshmen at Duke.

Coastal Plain League Baseball

GRIZZLIES 6-9, HiTOMS 3-10: Chris Swauger went 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Tommy Baldridge hit a two-run homer as the host HiToms beat Gastonia in the second game of a doubleheader at Thomasville's Finch Field.

Swauger hit his league-leading 14th home run in the opener, adding to his franchise-record single-season total.
