Newspaper
in Education
Newspaper
in Education (NIE) is an international cooperative effort among publications
to help raise civic-minded readers. It began back in the 1930s when
New York City teachers started requesting newspapers to include in their
curriculum. Today, the News & Record and NIE together have designed
a successful teacher-tested program that provides newspapers in the
classroom as a valuable learning tool.
A set of
classroom newspapers is delivered to teachers each week on days they
choose at no cost. Through newspapers, students can experience subjects
like social studies, science, mathematics, and more, all in the context
of everyday life. Teachers are also provided with classroom guides,
educational activities, monthly newsletters, plant tours, workshops,
and more. There are also special materials available on subjects like
weather, black history, and civics.
Classroom
papers are sponsored by local businesses at the cost of 14 cents per
paper. The News & Record pays the balance of the cost per paper
and does not profit from the NIE program. By supporting NIE, businesses
are helping to put today's news in the hands of tomorrow's leaders!
