Public comments sought on landfill cleanup

High Point, North Carolina and a group of businesses have found an ecofriendly solution to a not-so-friendly environmental problem.

The trio has been working since the early '90s to clean up chemicals in the ground at the former 13-acre Seaboard Chemical landfill and the city's 150-acre Riverdale Drive landfill, which sit side-by-side on Riverdale Drive.

Companies that once occupied the site are involved in the cleanup plan.

Exhibit shows rhythms of farm life

The lower level of the High Point Museum is filled with early 1900s farm artifacts: gathering baskets, McGuffey Readers and Spellers, an old plow, a wood tool box and a seed bag.

Older visitors may remember seeing and using some of the items on display, part of the museum's newest traveling exhibit "Growing Seasons: An American Farm Family at the Beginning of the 20th Century."

Friends fill senior centers with laughter

Colorful balloons decorated the Parker Center at Wesleyan Education Center for National Assisted Living Week, Sept. 7-13.

This year, Piedmont Christian Home on Deep River Road and Wesleyan Arms Assisted Living Facility on Centennial Street shared in the celebration, "Filling Life with Love." Janet Wagner, activities director at Wesleyan Arms, and Lou Atkinson in sales and marketing at Piedmont Christian Home, planned the joint activity.

Braxton Barnett, administrator at Wesleyan Arms, welcomed everyone.

Cancer is hard road to travel without aid

For each cancer patient, the road to recovery is filled with challenges.

Challenges such as fear, pain and expense.

One challenge cancer patients should not have is transportation. However, the nation's current economic and fuel crises are taking a high toll on these people whose resources, not to mention their health, are already severely strained.

"We have a lot of situations where patients don't have the resources to get rides to and from treatment," explained Nicole Witten, mission delivery manager for the American Cancer Society in Greensboro.

Comment on High Point industrial-waste cleanup plan

A public comment period begins Wednesday on a proposed remedial action plan to clean up contaminated water at a former industrial dumping site, once owned by Seaboard Chemical, and at Riverdale Drive Landfill, owned by High Point.

A central part of the plan includes planting trees on 30 acres of land to help pull out the contaminated water. The city will be required to monitor the chemical levels of the groundwater and report periodically to the state, and officials say the clean-up process will take decades.

Pointers reunion is 37-year tradition

I attended a reunion Aug. 29 through Sept. 1 that takes this definition to another level.

Unlike reunions with a single purpose, this reunion combines all of the ingredients - relatives, friends and associates - into a bowl and adds a pinch of respect, a dash of neighbor and neighborhood, a teaspoon of sharing, a tablespoon of our history and a cup of love.

Church to mark its 100th anniversary

HIGH POINT -- Christine Campbell will turn 99 on Oct. 13. And a few days before her celebration, her church will celebrate its 100th anniversary.

Campbell is looking forward to both celebrations. Westchester Baptist has a bright future, she said.

Employee of year wears many hats

Mary Barrow loves her job.

The High Point Police Department's employee of the year goes to work at 6:30 a.m. and leaves at 5:30 or 6 p.m. and works some hours on Saturdays to keep up.

Although Barrow works as office support for the department's professional standards department (internal affairs) investigating citizen complaints, Barrow also helps detectives with transcribing interrogations and information gathered during cases.

From January through last Monday, Barrow said she's transcribed 65 cases.

Reeds to serve more mature crowd

Not seeing much in the way of entertainment for people older than 30, Tim and Debbie Reed of Thomasville decided to offer an opportunity for Triad residents.

"We're trying to attract people 30 to 65 because we feel there is no place around that does not cater to college students, unless you go to a chain restaurant," said Debbie Reed, 45. Tim Reed is 46.

Mother writes kids' book

Would it be painful to hug a porcupine? Not if you are High Pointer Kimberly Cakal. She knows all about it and has even written a children's book, "Today I Hugged a Porcupine."

Cakal recently read the book to a group of children at the High Point Public Library. After the reading, the children made their own porcupines with pipe cleaners and quills. They decorated porcupine art work by adding quills to the faces of a stamped porcupine.

Cakal's porcupine puppet was a big hit with those present. Many of them actually hugged this porcupine and patted its body.

United Way announces campaign goal

Year after year your company may ask you to pledge funds to United Way, but do you know how the nonprofit's partner agencies benefit from those donations?

United Way funds "allow us to provide programs and services for people who otherwise would not be served," said Ron Rau, president and CEO of Alcohol and Drug Services.

In High Point, the organization operates Serenity Kids, a 14-session program that works with children who are affected by substance abuse, such as when their parents, grandparents, older siblings or another person in their lives is an addict.

Piedmont School students honored their parents, grandparents, fire and police officials and the military during a Special Persons Day ceremony Sept. 11.

Since the first anniversary of Sept. 11, the school has recognized the men and women who have fought and are still fighting to protect the country. Special Persons Day has always been in September, and it made sense to combine it with a Sept. 11 remembrance, said director Dorie Sturgill and teacher Erika Allred.

Nonprofit launches movie making program

West End Ministries' goal is to teach low-income people that they have a voice.

One way the nonprofit will do that is through a new movie-making program, funded with a $2,000 grant from High Point's Department of Community Development and Housing. West End Ministries will provide space, electricity and money for a coordinator for the program.

High Point approves senior apartments

Seniors in the area will have a new living arrangement to choose from after the High Point City Council approved a rezoning request and annexation Monday night.

Spectrum Acquisition, a Denver-based company, is interested in building a 132-unit, 150-bed center on 4 acres on West Wendover Avenue. The property is bordered by Piedmont Parkway to the east and Hickory Grove Road to the north.

Group offers hope to mentally ill

It was a cloudy, gray day in the parking lot at the High Point Country Club at Emerywood but inside the building the sun was out with blinding intensity. You almost needed sunglasses.

This was the fundraiser for the Mental Health Association in High Point. Deep purple agapanthus centerpieces decorated each table. The theme of the fundraiser was "Bloom Where You are Planted." Good advice for everyone. A wonderful atmosphere of positive energy was flowing through the room.

City denied problems of its black residents

Around the 1935-36 time frame, several stories appeared in the local newspaper regarding the housing shortage throughout High Point.

Even though the wording of the stories sounded as if they were addressing conditions in both black and white communities, it was obvious the core city -- or better still, the needs of the black community -- were never considered.

An organization doesn't have to be nonprofit to receive grant funding from the U.S. government, says nonprofit National Network Services.

There's funding out there for small business as well, but most people don't know about it. That's were this nonprofit comes in.

Through its Small Business Development Program, the National Network Services works with small businesses, organizations and nonprofits to locate and apply for grants and low or non-interest loans. Most grants are for business start-ups and expansion, salary and procurement of supplies and equipment.

Serenity salon offers personal services

Serenity owner Reneé South dreamed of owning her own hair and nail salon since she was a teenager.

At 17 and still in high school, South began pursuing her education and career aspirations.

After working for 10 years in various salons, South knew she wanted to open her own business.

"Everywhere I worked, there were things I wanted to change," she said. "But the only way to achieve what I wanted was to go out on my own."

Church starts ministry for dads

Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church is starting a ministry for dads.

Bonnie Dixon, the church's director of communications, said "Letters From Dad" arose from the Wesley 100 United Methodist Men's ministry. A member of that group received information from the national program and wanted to bring it to the church.

The program helps fathers learn how to leave a legacy for their families by learning how to say things they've always wanted to say but didn't know how to, such as "I love you" and "I'll always be there for you."
